Nix, Kinky & Cosy

This is the very first time that the Belgian Comic Strip Centre has the pleasure of welcoming twins to its Gallery. They are certainly not unimportant ones, because the Kinky & Cosy sisters stand for rock ’n roll in comic strips.

Even though this innovative series of gags is certainly reminiscent of the Flemish grand masters of humorous comic strips, such as Marc Sleen and Willy Vandersteen, one can equally detect Gary Larson’s Anglo-Saxon absurdity. However, what is most striking of all is just how talented Nix, the author himself, actually is because he always manages to come up with something surprisingly unique. Every new Kinky and Cosy book therefore guarantees to give the reader a fantastic hour of original fun and laughter. It is therefore no wonder that this top series is ranking high in the popularity charts throughout the whole of Europe. Not only in the hardback version, but also the Kinky and Cosy cartoons are conquering our hearts, young and old alike.

The pleasantly disturbed little sisters, Kinky and Cosy, manage to wreak havoc in all their naivety and innocence. Fearless and completely uninhibited, these cute little horrors waltz through life, causing mayhem and slapstick with their unfazed children's logic.

Since they first came to life in the newspaper ‘De Morgen’, the duo is now well on the way to world domination.

The comic strip is published in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, as well as the Czech Republic. In Brussels, the ‘Beursstraat’ [Stock Exchange Street] has now been renamed as the Kinky & Cosy Street. In 2006, these famous siblings were awarded the Prize for Humour at the prestigious comic strip festival in Angoulême in France, and in 2007 they walked away with the Brussels Youth Prize.

This is what the press had to say about Kinky and Cosy’s debut comic book: “Nix has given the national press a new and wilful type of cartoon 'heroes', with which he simply sets light to the well-trodden path of traditional daily comic strips!”

Nix (Marnix Verduyn)

Even though Nix was already drawing comic strips in Nero’s style at the age of six, and already enjoyed great local fame as a cartoonist in Leuven, his talent came close to being lost forever. After all, Marnix joined Belgacom as a civil engineer and left the world of comic strips behind. However, his muse had other plans for him. Cartoons and comic strips were made for the daily newspapers ‘De Morgen’, ‘Het Nieuwsblad’, ‘Algemeen Dagblad’ and for ‘Spirou’. His comic strip characters are Kinky and Cosy, the blonde-haired twins in their little red dresses, and Billy Bob, a philosophical cowboy. Besides creating comic strips, ‘Comic Engineer’ Nix has also worked as a lecturer at the Sint Lukas Arts College in Brussels, and is a gifted performer, organises exhibitions (Angoulême 2004, New York 2008) and animates cartoons (for television channels TMF and VRT). The successful duo Kinky & Cosy is currently being turned into a long-running cartoon series. So, we will be hearing a lot from them. And seeing them too, of course.
